What to Expect at Your Winter Wedding in Hawaii

Any person planning their dream wedding in Hawaii likely imagines saying “I do” on an idyllic white sand beach or toasting as a secret waterfall crashes majestically in the background. No matter what you envision, you’re likely picturing some or all of your wedding outdoors. Anyone dreaming of a winter beach wedding likely wonders what Hawaii is like during the wintertime. Because of Hawaii’s tropical climate, locals say there are only two seasons on the islands: summer and winter. Though winter does tend to have more rain, the temperature doesn’t drop much. Hawaii’s high season runs from mid-December till about April, depending on where the Easter holiday lands. The holidays in particular are a popular time to visit Hawaii, but those hoping to save some money can still catch the offseason in late November and early December.

Winter Temperature

While Hawaii is a bit cooler in the winter, this tends to be a benefit to travelers. Daytime highs range around upper 70s F to low 80s F, leaving plenty of warm days for sunbathing and swimming. At night, the temperature drops to around mid-60s F but rarely dips lower than that. The temperature is also heavily influenced by elevation so as you go higher, the temperatures dip lower.

So do I need a coat or long pants?

There is no need to bring anything heavier than a light jacket or sweater with you to Hawaii during the winter. It is possible for the temperature to drop due to a cold spell though even then a coat would be much too heavy. It is not necessary to pack pants for warmth, but you may want to consider what pants you may need based on the activities you’re planning leading up to the Big Day.

Winter Weather

The winter season in Hawaii is typically a bit rainier than the summer season. Each island has its own relationship with rain so it does vary depending on where you are. For instance, Kauai is the rainiest island, and the island’s Mount Waialeale is one of the wettest places on earth. On the plus side, rains tend to be overnight as opposed to throughout the day. Multiple rainy days in a row are rare. Though the rain can affect your itinerary, it can also enhance your stay- waterfalls will be much fuller during the winter due to the rains.

Can I still sunbathe?

Yes! Sunbathing is still possible and encouraged during winter in Hawaii. Storms tend to form on the northern shore and hit the eastern shore. If you head to the south and west coasts of the islands, you will be able to avoid rain and catch those rays. We suggest Kaanapali or Kihei on Maui, Waikiki Beach or Ko Olina on Oahu, Waikoloa and the Kohala Coast on the Big Island, or Four Seasons Resort at the southern tip of Lanai.

Winter Flowers

While it is true that many parts of the mainland United States have winters cold enough to affect plant life, Hawaii’s tropical climate yields gorgeous flora that blooms all year long.

If I get married in Hawaii during winter, can I still have my preferred flowers?

Your favorite varieties of hibiscus and birds of paradise will be available for your bouquet for your big day. There are some varieties of plumeria that are dormant during the winter, but there are still many varieties blooming throughout the year. As an added bonus, Poinsettias bloom in the winter in Hawaii so you can easily include these iconic winter blooms in your wedding flowers or simply enjoy their vibrant presence throughout the islands.

Winter Water Activities

Due to the warm weather, you can expect your favorite water activity to be available during winter in Hawaii. Winter in Hawaii is actually the high tourist season so snorkeling and swimming are popular during the winter months. Aside from the usual incredible water activities available, Hawaii offers some special natural wonders in the winter that you cannot see anywhere else.

The Big Waves

During the winter in Hawaii, head over to the north shore to see legendary waves that reach above 20 ft in height. If you and your wedding party are interested in surfing, winter is the ideal time to tie the knot in Hawaii. Many of the major surf competitions like the Vans Triple Crown on Oahu are held during winter so that contestants can surf the iconic waves.

Whale Watching

Another singular experience that can only be found during winter in Hawaii is whale watching. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii in winter and can be seen throughout the winter. Whale watching season begins in November, and it peaks during January and February. If you are planning a wedding during spring, you can still see them as late as April.

In Conclusion

Hawaii is a sought after destination no matter what time of year it is. High season in Hawaii is actually during the winter because it is so pleasant to escape colder climates for Hawaii’s temperate cold months. It is always wonderful to be in Hawaii, but if you enjoy any of the special activities only offered in winter, it may be worth the extra investment in planning your wedding during high season. If you want to enjoy unique Hawaiian winter activities without breaking the bank, avoid the holidays and explore options in November or February. And don’t get overwhelmed! No matter when you go, you will have the time of your life.
