Formerly known as White Sands Beach Park, Magic Sands Beach is famous for its disappearing sand. During high surf, waves can strip the beach overnight and expose the dark lava rock below; when swells ease, the sand gradually returns—leaving the shoreline remarkably clean.
Located about 3 miles south of downtown Kailua-Kona along Alii Drive, Magic Sands offers easy access to shopping, dining, and beachside bars. Framed by coconut palms and lava rock, it’s a picturesque spot that can get crowded, especially on weekends.
The sandy bottom slopes gradually, providing swimming opportunities in calmer summer months. In winter, stronger swells and rip currents are common, making the beach a favorite for boogie boarding. A lifeguard is on duty—always check conditions before entering the water.
Magic Sands overlooks Laaloa Bay, a culturally significant area that includes the ruins of Haukalua Heiau, an ancient Hawaiian temple. Please respect posted signs and protected areas, as preservation efforts are ongoing.
