Kohanaiki Beach Park (Pine Trees) lies about 7 miles north of Kailua-Kona and is known for its coastal vegetation, including heliotrope and hau trees. It’s a favorite of local surfers thanks to consistent waves; beginners may prefer lessons at Kahaluu Beach Park.
Swimming is limited due to the rocky bottom and changing conditions, but the area is great for surfing, barbecues, and sunsets. Camping is permitted Thursday–Monday with a county permit; arrive early as sites fill quickly. Access gates are locked from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Kohanaiki Beach Park sits along the Kohanaiki Trail, an ancient coastal route tied to the traditional ahupuaa land-management system. The Kohanaiki Club helps preserve the area’s history and supports environmental stewardship, with shoreline trails leading to historic sites.
