Honaunau Bay (Two Step) is a beautiful, clear-water bay on the Big Island, famous for snorkeling and shore divingover healthy coral reefs. Beginners can explore the shallower areas near the entry, while experienced divers venture into deeper water. Spinner dolphins are occasionally seen offshore—enjoy them from a respectful distance.
Adjacent to the bay, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is a significant cultural site where ancient Hawaiians once sought refuge. Spanning 182 acres, it offers powerful insight into Hawaiian history and craftsmanship. The park opens at 7:00 a.m.—arrive early and dress respectfully if you plan to visit before or after the water.
Parking & access: For snorkeling at Two Step, use the designated parking area just before the park entrance or limited roadside parking nearby; avoid using the National Park’s main lot for water access. Mornings typically offer the best visibility and calmer conditions; afternoons can bring wind, surge, and reduced clarity.
Entry & safety: Access the water from the smooth lava ledge known as “Two Step.” There are no lifeguards, and surge can make entry/exit tricky—use caution, avoid standing on coral, and wear reef-safe sunscreen. If you prefer sandy beach time, choose a nearby beach instead and return here specifically for snorkeling or diving.
