Makalawena Beach offers a tranquil, crowd-free escape on the Big Island, reached primarily on foot across uneven lava terrain. Located within Kekaha Kai State Park, it features pristine white sand and several crescent coves between Mahaiula and Maniniowali (Kua Bay).

Renowned for its beauty and rich marine life, Makalawena is great for swimming, bodyboarding, and snorkelingaround the lava outcrops when conditions are calm. Bring plenty of water, reef-safe sunscreen, snacks, and sun protection—shade is limited and there are no lifeguards. Be cautious of strong currents and shorebreak, especially during winter swells.

Nearby Opaeula Pond is an important coastal bird habitat; please respect wildlife and stay on designated paths. For visitors willing to make the hike, Makalawena rewards with one of the most memorable beach experiences on the island.
