Waialea Bay (Beach 69) is one of the Big Island’s top snorkeling spots, just south of Hapuna Beach. Designated a Marine Life Conservation District in 1985, the area protects marine life; in winter you may even spot dolphins and humpback whales offshore. With no hotels on the shoreline, the beach feels natural and relaxed—ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Mornings usually offer the calmest water, while afternoons tend to be busier.

The shoreline mixes white sand and rocky patches, with the best snorkeling in summer. The bay drops to about 30 feet, and the healthiest reefs are around mid-bay and the north end. No lifeguards are on duty, but showers and restroomsare available. Expect diverse marine life around the coral and rocks. Shaded areas beneath kiawe trees are great for breaks—just wear shoes because of the thorns. For boogie boarding, head to Hapuna Beach instead.
