Hapuna Beach—renowned as one of Hawaii’s top beaches—offers nearly a half-mile of white sand along the Big Island’s Kohala Coast. The name “Hapuna” means “spring” or “pool” in Hawaiian. It’s ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and bodyboarding; in winter, you may even spot migrating humpback whales offshore.
Snorkeling is best along the southern end during calm summer conditions, while nearby Waialea Bay (Beach 69) offers additional, often better, snorkeling options. Lifeguards are on duty, but ocean safety is still essential. Rainfall is low here, so bring reef-safe sunscreen. Picnic areas are available, but natural shade is limited—an umbrella helps.
Hapuna is also part of the Ala Kahakai coastal trail, which connects stretches of the Kohala shoreline and historic pathways.
