Papakolea Green Sand Beach—one of only four green sand beaches in the world—is a must-see for adventurous beachgoers and hikers. Located near South Point (Ka Lae) in Mahana Bay, its distinctive green sand comes from olivine crystals eroded from a nearby volcanic cinder cone.

Access & hike: Reaching Papakolea requires a 5.5-mile round-trip hike with about 275 feet of elevation gain. The trail is uneven and exposed, so wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water and snacks, and start early. There are no amenitiesor shade along the route. The final descent into the bay is steep and requires careful footing.

Regulations: You may see locals offering off-road rides to the beach; this practice is not permitted and can damage the fragile landscape. Walk the trail to help protect the area.

Safety & what to do: Papakolea is ideal for photography, sightseeing, hiking, and birdwatching. Swimming is not recommended due to strong surf, currents, and no lifeguards—enjoy the views from shore and exercise caution near the water.
